Job Summary: We are seeking a passionate, team player who will help our school meet its academic goals by providing a structured AVID curriculum to students. An AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teacher prepares students for college and career success by teaching rigorous skills, fostering a college-going culture, and using WICOR methodologies (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading). They mentor students, monitor academic progress, and implement specialized tutorials to boost success in advanced courses.
Primary AVID Teaching Responsibilities:
- Implementing WICOR Strategies: They teach and model strategies focusing on Writing to learn, Inquiry-based instruction, Collaborative learning, Organization (such as binder checks), and Reading for comprehension.
- Facilitating Tutorials:
AVID teachers guide tutorials twice a week, where they train students to use Tutorial Request Forms (TRFs) to identify academic challenges and collaborate with tutors to find answers independently.
- Building Academic Agency: They foster academic habits, critical thinking, and confidence, ensuring students take ownership of their learning and success.
- Advocating for Rigor: They actively encourage students to enroll in rigorous, college-preparatory coursework (AP, IB, Honors) and provide the support necessary for them to succeed in those classes.
- Mentoring and Support: They build strong relationships with students to foster a safe, supportive classroom culture, often guiding them through goal-setting and college/career exploration.
- Collaborating with Staff: AVID teachers work with counselors, administrators, and other staff to create a schoolwide college-ready culture.
