Job Description

Position: Teacher

Purpose: To create a flexible program and an environment favorable to learning and personal growth. To encourage students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed for continuous growth and development. To provide students with experiences that integrate the affective, cognitive, and psychomotor dimensions of learning. To establish effective rapport with students and their parents, assisting students in developing positive feelings toward themselves and others.

Essential Functions

The incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Planning and Implementation:
    • Plan and implement a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students and complies with State Department of Education Standards.
    • Guide the learning process toward achieving curriculum goals. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, assignments, units, and projects in harmony with curriculum goals, and communicate these objectives to students.
    • Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Classroom Management:
    • Establish and maintain standards of appropriate student behavior and discipline to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom and assist in its maintenance campus-wide.
  • Evaluation and Assessment:
    • Evaluate the learning progress of students on a regular basis.
    • Assess the accomplishments of students regularly and provide progress reports as required.
    • Administer group standardized tests in accordance with the MAA testing program.
  • Communication:
    • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and parents concerning students' academic, social, and behavioral progress.
    • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
    • Meet and instruct assigned classes in designated locations and times.
  • Resource Management:
    • Select and request appropriate books and instructional materials and maintain required inventory records.
    • Prescribe effective learning programs and initiate referrals to appropriate personnel when concerns arise.
    • Provide directions and materials for substitute teachers and plan for and supervise classroom aides, guests, and volunteers.
  • Collaboration:
    • Cooperate with staff and support personnel in assessing and helping students with health, attitude, learning, and behavioral problems.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone.
  • Knowledge of the Mark Armijo Academy community, computer system, financial procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of others.
  • Knowledge of Mark Armijo Academy policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies, and child abuse/neglect.
  • Knowledge of all laws, regulations, and guidelines affecting teachers and students.
  • Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members, and staff.

Requirements

Minimum Required Education, Licenses, Certifications, Experience, and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Current New Mexico teaching certificate in the specified field
  • Current endorsements dependent upon specific positions may be required.
  • Additional requirements may be applicable for specific positions
